Recommended Math Sequence
Not sure where to start? Here are two common pathways based on readiness. The best way to confirm the right starting point is to use our math placement tests.
*Highly recommended, optional labs for Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 provide additional guided practice and support.

Math options by age and readiness
Elementary and Middle School (Grades 5 or 6–8)
Math 5/6 strengthens whole-number, fraction, decimal, measurement, area, perimeter, data, and probability skills so students can enter middle-school math with confidence.
Middle School Math 6/7 strengthens foundational math skills (fractions, decimals) and extends students’ understanding of rational numbers, ratios, percents, expressions, equations, geometry, and statistics.
Pre-Algebra is the critical “handshake” between arithmetic and abstract thinking.
Optional support: Pre-Algebra Math Lab is ideal for students who benefit from reinforcement, practice, and added accountability alongside Pre-Algebra.
These courses emphasize the “Why” behind the “how,” ensuring students don’t just memorize formulas but understand the logic.
High School Core Tracks (Grades 9–12)
Algebra 1 is a pivotal foundation for high school success, bridging the gap between basic math and abstract reasoning through expert instruction and clear, step-by-step guidance.
Level: Algebra 1 is offered in two levels:
Regular Academic: standard high school rigor with full teacher support
Honors: for students seeking deeper analytical challenges with full teacher support
Optional support: The Algebra 1 Math Lab is ideal for students who benefit from reinforcement, practice, and added accountability alongside Algebra 1 (either level).
Geometry is the foundation of deductive reasoning.
Level: Geometry is offered in two levels:
Regular Academic: standard high school rigor with full teacher support
Honors: for students seeking deeper analytical challenges with full teacher support
Optional support: The Geometry Math Lab is ideal for students who benefit from reinforcement, practice, and added accountability alongside Geometry (either level).
Algebra 2 moves beyond the basics of Algebra 1, introducing students to complex numbers, logarithms, and trigonometry. It is the essential “bridge” that turns a math student into a mathematical thinker, preparing them for the rigors of Precalculus and standardized testing (SAT/ACT).
Level: Algebra 2 is offered in two levels:
Regular Academic: standard high school rigor with full teacher support
Honors: for students seeking deeper analytical challenges with full teacher support
Optional support: The Algebra 2 Math Lab is ideal for students who benefit from reinforcement, practice, and added accountability alongside Algebra 2 (either level).
Our high school tracks include professional grading by invested teachers so parents don’t have to be the “Math Expert” at the kitchen table.
High School Advanced Tracks (Grades 10–12)
The “STEM Lauchpad”: This isn’t just “more math”–it’s a College Board-aligned deep dive into dynamic modeling. Students learn to use functions to describe real-world phenomena, building the precise analytical stamina required for AP Calculus and university-level science and engineering tracks.
The Advantage: Provides a formal AP credit pathway for students to demonstyrate college-level mastery before they even hit their senior year.
The “Data Scientist” Track: In a world driven by “big data,” this course teaches students how to separate signal from noise. Students will master the art of sampling, experimental design, and probability, learning how to defend their conclusions with mathematical evidence.
Best for: Students interested in Social Sciences, Business, Medicine, or any field where interpreting research and trends is a core professional skill.
Rigorous, College Board-audited courses for students aiming for STEM careers or college credit.
How to choose the right math starting point
- If fractions and decimals are shaky, start with Math 5/6 before moving into Middle School Math 6/7.
- If your student needs one more solid middle school year before algebra, Middle School Math 6/7 can be the right bridge to Pre-Algebra.
- If your student is ready for abstract reasoning but needs support, pair Pre-Algebra or Algebra 1 with the optional lab.
- If your student is finishing Algebra 2 and planning for advanced math, AP Precalculus is the next strong step before calculus-level work, while AP Statistics is excellent for many college-prep paths.
- If you need help determining, have your student take a placement test.
