The Middle School Math 5/6 course will provide and strengthen the elementary math skills needed as a strong foundation for entering the middle school grades. Students will build fluency and proficiency in all operations involving whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. The specific focus on fractions and decimals will provide the tools needed to increase confidence in solving problems. Students will develop an understanding of measuring volume and will solve problems involving volume, area, and perimeter. Students will collect, display, and analyze data in various ways and apply probability concepts. The student will solve problems using place values, exponents, mathematical properties, and order of operations. Students will be introduced to working with and evaluating expressions that contain a variable. The student will develop problem-solving skills and strategies by learning to make mathematical and real-world connections. This class provides students with an engaging, practical look at how math is used in everyday life. All the concepts covered in this curriculum will develop the skills needed for future math classes. Students will deepen their mathematical understanding and master the skills needed for success in their middle school years.
