The Language Arts Catalog

Bridging the gap between “learning to read” and “reading to learn” through creative expression and foundational grammar. Our Literature & Composition courses integrate reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, listening, speaking, and writing in a literature-rich format.

  • Literature & Composition 4/5: A gentle yet structured bridge into the world of literary analysis, where young writers move from basic sentences to cohesive paragraphs through the lens of classic children’s stories.
  • Literature & Composition 5/6: An upper-elementary mastery course that sharpens critical thinking and narrative voice, preparing students for the increased writing stamina and deeper thematic discussions of middle school.

At the 4th–6th grade level, we prioritize “Low Friction, High Feedback.” Our instructors focus on building a love for stories first, which naturally lowers the anxiety many young students feel when facing a blank page.

Students can continue through the Literature and Composition track, or use the English Foundations track when they need a more supportive bridge in grammar, composition, literature, and vocabulary. Students who thrive with imaginative writing and literary analysis will find the Creative Writing track a strong option.

The Literature & Composition Track

Deepening the connection between critical reading and formal writing.

  • Literature & Composition 6/7: A mastery-level transition into middle school expectations, where students move from basic summarizing to identifying complex themes and character motivations.
  • Literature & Composition 7/8 (Honors level available): The final “bridge” to high school English, centering on the five-paragraph essay, advanced vocabulary, and sophisticated literary devices.

The English Foundations Track

Strengthening the “building blocks” of the English language.

  • English Foundations 1: A supportive, high-feedback environment designed to solidify grammar, punctuation, and sentence-level clarity for the emerging writer.
  • English Foundations 2: A focused “mechanics” workshop that bridges the gap between strong sentences and organized, logical paragraphs.

The Creative Path

Bridging the gap between imaginative storytelling and academic rigor through narrative structure and character-driven analysis.

  • MS Creative Writing with Literature: A dynamic alternative for the avid reader who wants to learn the “architecture” of a story by writing their own, while still practicing core literary analysis.

Enhance the Experience with Language Arts Labs:

Students enrolled in Literature & Composition 7/8 or English Foundations 1 & 2 may add a weekly Language Arts Lab. These interactive, small-group sessions provide additional real-time coaching, targeted grammar practice, and personalized feedback to ensure every student masters the week’s core concepts.

Which track is right for my student?

  • Choose Literature & Composition if your student is comfortable with the mechanics of a sentence and is ready to argue why a character made a specific choice.
  • Choose English Foundations if your student has great ideas but struggles with “how” to get them onto the page without errors in grammar or organization.
  • Choose the Creative Path if your student is an avid storyteller who wants to master the technical “architecture” of a plot while still practicing high-level literary analysis.

As students move into the 9th and 10th-grade years, the focus shifts from “learning to write” to “writing to argue.” Our high school courses emphasize rhetoric, evidence, and college-readiness.

  • Literature & Composition 8/9: The essential transition into high school analysis, where students move beyond simple plot summaries to craft sophisticated, thesis-driven essays across a variety of literary genres.
  • English Foundations 3: A high-school-level “mechanics” intensive designed to polish grammar, sentence variety, and organizational logic for students who have strong ideas but need a more structured approach to formal writing.

How to choose the right English track
