Physics Course Syllabus

Why Study Physics?

Physics is the fundamental study of matter, energy, and the laws that govern the behavior of our universe. Why do things move? How does light travel? How do circuits power our world?

This course presents both conceptual and mathematical perspectives, helping students develop a clear understanding of physical principles while building the critical thinking skills needed to solve complex problems.

⚖️ Choose Your Track: Regular Academic vs. Honors

Students may enroll in either the Regular or Honors version of the course. Both tracks cover the same core topics, but the Honors track features increased mathematical depth and more complex problem-solving requirements.

Core Topics Covered in Both Tracks:

  • Mechanics: Motion (1D & 2D), Forces, Gravity, Momentum, and Energy.

  • Matter & Heat: Thermal Physics.

  • Electricity & Magnetism: Electrostatics, Circuits, and Magnetism.

  • Waves: Sound and Light.

🛠 How the Self-Paced Model Works

This course is designed for flexibility, combining independent study with guided inquiry.

  • Work on Your Schedule: Progress through weekly modules at your own pace. There is no required weekly Live Zoom attendance.

  • Guided Pacing: A suggested weekly schedule is provided to help students manage their time and avoid falling behind.

  • Interactive Canvas Learning: Students engage with assigned readings, multimedia lessons, and guided inquiry tasks all hosted on the Canvas LMS.

  • Deadlines for Success: *

    • January 8, 2027: First Semester completion.

    • May 21, 2027: Full Course completion.

🤝 Instructor Support & Accountability

Even in a self-paced environment, the instructor remains an active partner in the student’s education:

  • Active Monitoring: Regular review of all submitted activities, assignments, and labs.

  • Quarterly 1-on-1s: Required quarterly meetings via Zoom to discuss progress, address challenging physics concepts, and ensure the student is meeting their goals.

  • Direct Access: Availability via email (48-hour response time) and scheduled office hours for personalized help.

🧪 Laboratory Investigation

Science is best learned by doing. This course includes a mix of hands-on laboratory experiments and virtual labs. These activities provide foundational practice with the laws of physics and reinforce inquiry-based investigation skills.

Is This the Right Fit?

This course is ideal for students who:

  • Are curious about the “how” and “why” behind the physical world.

  • Need a flexible science credit to balance a busy schedule.

  • Are prepared to build strong problem-solving and mathematical strategies.

Instructor Bio

Lisa Duckworth

Hi! I am Lisa Duckworth, and I am super excited to teach science with Aim Academy! I have been an educator for 30 years. I have a Bachelor of Science in Science Education from North Carolina State University (Go Wolfpack!) and have taught science to all ages of students. I started teaching public high school science in NC – Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and AP Biology and then took time off to be a homeschooling mom to 4 fabulous kids. Over the last 20 years, I have been teaching in our homeschool coop, and my teaching repertoire has expanded to math, history, English, art, and science classes for all ages, you name a topic, and I have probably taught a course in it over the years. For the last seven years, I have been teaching science summer camp classes to kids ages 7-16 and teaching science classes at our local community college and I am an AP Reader for Environmental Science in June each year. But, as you can probably tell, I love science! Contact: lduckworth[at]aimacademy.online
