Description

Personal Finance Syllabus

This one-semester Personal Finance course teaches students the essential skills they need to manage money confidently and make informed financial decisions. Students explore budgeting, saving, investing, credit, taxes, insurance, and long-term financial planning through real-world examples and hands-on activities like stock-market simulations, comparison shopping projects, and debt-repayment scenarios. The course emphasizes practical life skills—including reading pay stubs, completing mock tax forms, evaluating loans, and building a personal financial plan—that students can use immediately in their own lives. A major highlight is the capstone project, in which students design a comprehensive financial roadmap covering career goals, budgeting, saving, investing, and insurance. The class includes live instruction and interactive discussions that help students apply concepts in meaningful ways. This course is aligned with Pennsylvania and California state personal finance requirements, and students have the opportunity to earn a financial achievement certificate from a national financial education organization at the end of the class.

Students will engage in a budget simulation game, a stock market simulation game, a comparison shopping project, and a financial roadmap project. In class, the teacher will primarily use discussions, lectures, and critical thinking activities to promote student learning and engagement. Most assignments will involve reading about a relevant current issue, watching a finance video, or completing an activity. Many assignments will include comprehension and reflective questions to help students retain, evaluate, and analyze the information provided.

Course Structure

The weekly one-hour live class will be interactive and educational. Students will then use the information from the live class to complete the weekly quiz and assignments. Recordings are available in case students must miss the live class. There are an estimated 3-4 hours of work per week outside of the live class.

Who should enroll?

This course is designed for students in grades 9-12. The course can be used to fulfill typical state requirements for personal financial literacy. It contains some basic consumer math, but doesn’t emphasize it. The maximum class size is 16 students to encourage student engagement.
