Many well known children’s stories and fables were originally written in French. The goal for this course is to expose students to familiar children’s stories or fables in French. Since these stories are so familiar and often repetitious in nature, students will easily be able to learn the vocabulary and find themselves able to understand the texts. (ie: The 3 little pigs, Chicken Little, The Fox and the Crow) and at least one longer Fairy Tale (ie: Snow White, Cinderella). Live class activities will work through the stories and the vocabulary to prepare for a reading in class by the students. Students will then listen to native speakers present the stories as well.

Course Structure

Each week a new story will be introduced. Vocabulary will be reviewed and presented as well as any grammatical structure that will be needed to follow the story line. Activities will be incorporated that allow students to interpret the story and talk about it’s meaning or the moral presented. When possible a video will be presented that students can watch in order to hear a native speaker present the story. The only homework for this class will be activities that will aid the student in preparing for reading and discussing (in French) the story in class. (30 minute per week).

This was a very fun class, it was not stressful and I learned a lot of new vocabulary. This class helped me with my French pronunciation and I feel more confidant in my French speaking, and I owe it all to Mme Barstow! Merci for a great time.

All the stories in this class were fun, and one of them, Le Lion et le Hérrison, was new to me. As such, I both learned new stories, and got to practice my French. By reading along to the stories, I got better at pronunciation and also at my vocabulary. In this class, I learned about an African story to explain animals’ places in the world, some vocabulary, and history of fairytales. I would recommend this class to other people, as it was fun and educational

This was such a fun class to take! Each story was easy to understand, charming, and exciting to read, whether they were familiar to me or not. I learned a lot of new French vocabulary that I can’t wait to use. I would absolutely recommend this class to any level of French student!

Instructor Bio

Sally Barstow

An interest in learning and my love of French have woven together in my life to feed my love of teaching.  I recall with fondness the 14 years I homeschooled my two youngest children.  Today I proudly continue working with homeschoolers, opening up to them the mysteries of the French language. My interest in French was birthed in my desire to connect with my family in Belgium.  I enjoy sharing with my students that I began learning French in high school, like many of them are doing.  Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of not only visiting my Belgian family, but hosting students from French speaking countries, only to later visit them and their families in their home countries.  I firmly believe that the purpose of learning a language is to broaden one’s experience with others and to help find one’s purpose and place in the world.
