 Middle School Spanish Syllabus

Course Structure

This course is designed to introduce middle school students to the Spanish language in a fun, hands-on way. The class will take a task-based approach, with different topics throughout the year. Sample topics include animals, family and friends, games, hobbies, etc. We regularly use fun, simple authentic resources from the Spanish-speaking world, such as games, songs, and stories.

During live class sessions, students will be expected to be on camera and actively participate in class. Please note that some weeks’ tasks will require students to bring certain materials to class (simple cooking ingredients, for instance). We will always provide advance notice regarding what they will need to bring. Students will be given tasks to complete outside of class to further practice what they have been learning.

Who should enroll?

This course is intended for students in grades 5-8, including those with and without previous Spanish experience.  The course is different from one year to the next so that students can spend multiple years in it and continue to progress each year.  Parents of students with extensive Spanish background may wish to contact Sr. Nance to discuss options regarding placement.

Technology Requirements

  • High-speed, broadband Internet
  • Microphone and webcam (for live sessions)
  • Streaming video capabilities to watch recorded lectures

Evaluation and Feedback

It is our belief that students learn best when they are comfortable and engaged in the work that they are doing. We also believe that languages are learned through large amounts of exposure to engaging, comprehensible input. Therefore, our focus is not on small details, but rather on the big picture.  Students will receive weekly feedback on their speaking assignments and their at-home task for the week.

Communication

Barring unusual circumstances, we grade assignments within 2 business days of the due date and reply to student and parent communication with 24 hours.
