GIDAS (Genes in Diseases and Symptoms) is a student-led community where science meets technology. We explore genomics, personalized medicine, and computational biology—the exact tools modern scientists use to solve complex medical puzzles. Whether you want to go into medicine, computer science, or you just love a good mystery, there is a place for you here. No prior programming or advanced biology experience required!
GIDAS (pronounced “Guide-Us”) is an international network of high school clubs that connects the general public with scientific researchers. Members of the AAO GIDAS club will learn to use research-applicable computational biology tools and advocate for the importance of genetics in health and personalized medicine. Throughout the year, club members will work through a provided curriculum and have the opportunity to participate in two research competitions: the Genes and Health Contest and the High School GIDAS Research Conference. GIDAS content is flexible and can be taught by leaders and members. Club leadership positions will be available. GIDAS is a MiRcore project.
GIDAS is perfect for any student with an interest in biological science or mathematics, as well as anyone considering a career in medical research. The club is open to all high school students, however some background in biology and a solid understanding of algebra are helpful for grasping the material. GIDAS is fairly academic in focus but requires limited commitment outside of meetings for members not in leadership positions.

Student Leader: Burton Briggs is a high school junior who loves global travel, leadership, studying mathematical theory, and learning new things. Last summer, Burton participated in a miRcore computational biology research program at the University of Michigan, through which he discovered a passion that led him to become an active miRcore volunteer and the founder of the GIDAS club. He has completed high school biology, chemistry, and environmental science, and is currently enjoying AP Calculus BC. Burton is a Cadet Second Lieutenant in the Civil Air Patrol, currently serving on the Montana Cadet Advisory Council (CAC) and as the primary Montana representative to the Rocky Mountain Region CAC. He and his family have visited or lived in 48 states and over 35 countries.
