Description

Latin 1 Syllabus

Ready to train your brain as a gladiator trains for battle? Then it’s time to study Latin! In Latin 1, our goal is to introduce students to Latin grammar, vocabulary, and syntax as we work through the first 16 chapters of our text, Latin for the New Millennium. This text also provides students with the opportunity to practice reading simplified versions of authentic Latin literary works. In this way, students will be exposed to the literature and culture of Ancient Rome as well as Classical mythology. We will also explore the use of Latin in the Middle Ages and in the modern era. That’s right–Latin is NOT dead–it’s immortal!

Course Structure

The class is structured around weekly live meetings. Class attendance and participation are crucial to success. Weekly assignments are posted that build on what was presented in class, preparing the student for the upcoming meeting. Students can anticipate having about 3-4 hours of homework each week.

Quizzes and tests will be used to measure student understanding of grammatical concepts. In addition to assessments and homework assignments, cultural projects on topics such as Roman cuisine or fashion will be assigned, providing students with opportunities for creative, hands-on learning.

Who should enroll?

Students in grades 9-12 may enroll. Younger students who demonstrate academic discipline may be admitted with instructor approval.

Technology/Other Requirements

  • High-speed, broadband Internet
  • Microphone (for live session); a headset can be helpful if the setting has background noise
  • Streaming video capabilities to watch recorded lectures
  • A Quizlet account (free version) is highly recommended for vocabulary practice
  • A scanner is helpful for turning in assignments

Evaluation and Feedback

Most weekly homework is graded the week it is turned in. Projects may require longer grading times. Students and/or parents are encouraged to contact Dr. Mikell with any questions regarding the assignments.

Extra-credit assignments are given for each semester.

Communication

Parents and/or students are encouraged to email Dr. Mikell at smikell[at]aimacademy.online with questions regarding the class before the start of school. Once class has begun, please use the Canvas messaging system for all communication, and she will make every effort to respond within 24 hours.
