Course Description

This course will focus on developing a deep understanding of core chemistry concepts through real-world applications and problem-solving/reasoning skills. All science starts with trying to find answers to questions…. to ask the “Whys”! We will use reasoning and learning to answer the “whys” behind chemical phenomena, incorporating interactive methods, visual aids, hands-on labs, and relevant examples to build a strong understanding of the chemistry around us every day. We will supplement our textbook with current events and “How Stuff Works” projects and activities on chemistry topics. This course is suitable for students with various science/math backgrounds and, of course, those seeking a broader understanding of the subject and just want to know the Why!

  • Unit 1—Introduction to Chemistry
  • Unit 2—Properties of matter
  • Unit 3– Atomic Structure
  • Unit 4—Electron Arrangement
  • Unit 5—The Periodic Table
  • Unit 6– Bonding
  • Unit 7—Chemical Reactions
  • Unit 8–Stoichiometry
  • Unit 9 — Gases
  • Unit 10 — Solutions
  • Unit 11 — Reaction Rates and Equilibrium
  • Unit 12 – Acids and Bases
  • Unit 13 — Organic Chemistry

Course Structure

This course will be divided into 13 units. Each has a guiding question that will be referred to throughout the unit. Traditional textbook reading/work, interactive labs, class/group discussions, independent research and collaboration, demos, and critical thinking will be expected. We will value everyone’s contribution to the course. It is imperative that students attend the weekly class meeting, participate, and thoughtfully complete all assignments to the best of their ability. Live weekly classes will include a variety of activities, such as discussions, lecture notes, demonstrations, group activities/labs, and practice. Outside of class, students will be required to develop independent habits of completing all assigned work. Weekly quizzes and an end-of-unit test will be assigned.

Who should enroll?

This course is suitable for students with a variety of science/math backgrounds and, of course, those seeking a broader understanding of the subject and want to know the Why! While the class will not be entirely free of mathematics, we will not focus on the complex mathematical derivations that cause so many students to struggle. This course aims to equip students with a conceptual foundation in chemistry.

Recommended Prerequisite: Middle School physical science and pre-algebra

Technology Requirements

  • High-speed, broadband Internet
  • Web cam, sound card, and microphone (for live sessions)
  • Streaming video capabilities to watch recorded lectures
  • A scanner or a smartphone for submitting tests and homework

Evaluation and Feedback

While I am always an email away, sometimes it may take me a little while to respond. It is my priority to respond promptly, within 24 hours (weekends may take longer). I will hold office hours outside the weekly live classes so I am immediately available to answer your questions. I will inform you and remind you of this hour before the beginning of the school year. If this office hour changes, I will give you ample notice. Grades will always be available in Canvas for students and parents. I recommend checking often to keep up to date on your progress. Averages will be given at the end of each semester.

Communication

Communication is essential to me. I consider it the key to success. Assignments and any upcoming work will be posted two weeks in advance. If posted lessons change for any reason, I will clearly communicate to students and parents. I will also clearly communicate, with reminders, about all large assignments that may be due. I expect students and parents to check email and coursework daily. The best way to contact me is by email. I am always an email away, and I will respond within 24 hours (weekends may take longer). Required Texts

In addition to the textbook(s), you will need:

  • 3-ring notebook with unit dividers, with a few page protectors for use throughout the year
  • Calculator
  • School Supplies (Pencils, highlighters, other writing utensils)
  • Lab materials and supplies (these may change – a complete, updated list will be emailed to students in early summer or upon registration)

Shelley Wright

Science education is not just a job for me. It is my passion and my hobby. I’ve had this passion since childhood. I am a lifelong learner. My daily goal is to see a love of science ignited in the students and people in my life! After receiving my bachelor’s and master’s degree in microbiology and biochemistry, I went to work in research then quickly realized I missed being a student. . . . So, I became a teacher!
