Description

Founded in 2023, this student-led club meets on the 2nd & 4th Friday of the month at 1 PM ET. The staff also communicates regularly via Google Chat. The club publishes 8 issues of AAO’s Aim High! newsletter per year.

While in the club, members are responsible for contributing to at least seven of the eight editions of the Aim High! newsletter. All members participate in the editing and graphic design process, and may optionally write their own column. Throughout the year, members will grow their leadership and organizational skills within a team-centered environment. Staff members will learn how to gather, filter, and process articles through Google Forms and Google Sheets. They will also develop useful design skills by using Canva, a web-based graphic design platform, to produce each publication.

Club members will receive a school email account that must be used to sign in to Canva and other applications.

While there are no required prerequisites, club members should aim to possess the following skills:

  • Communication: We work as a team, so reporting issues in the newsletter or asking questions is important to ensure everything runs smoothly.
  • Time Management: Given the deadline for each issue, members need to pace themselves accordingly.
  • Organization: We will use various organizational applications offered by Google for Education. Students should be willing to learn how to use Google Chat, Google Sheets, Google Forms, Google Docs, and Google Calendar. Additionally, they should be willing to learn about design using Canva for Education.

Time Commitment: Members should expect to spend 1.5-3 hours per week on the newsletter outside of meeting times. Accommodations can be made for travel, illness, and related circumstances.

Student Leader: Hello! I’m Anastasia Nguyen, the current Managing Editor of Aim High! Newsletter. As a homeschooler, I know there are precious few venues for homeschooled students to have their voices heard, which is why I believe in Aim High! The newsletter is so important and needed. Aim High! is a unique, encouraging space for students to share their voices and visions with the entire school. Over the past two years that I’ve been in this club, I’ve been blown away by the truly incredible stories, articles, artwork, and more that AAO students have submitted to the newsletter. If you’re an aspiring writer or artist, or if you’re just passionate about letting students express themselves through their pen and paintbrush, I’d strongly encourage you to join the Aim High! Newsletter club!

  1. Kate Beck

Although this is my fourth year with Aim, this is my first year in the Aim High! Newsletter Club, and I wish I had joined the first year it was created! Reading the new edition of Aim High! was always a highlight of my month in previous years, but it’s even more fun being part of the team behind publication. As a writer, I’ve loved writing and editing articles, and as an artist, I’ve loved being able to use my graphic design skills putting it together in Canva. I also have to say that Anastasia is an exceptional student leader for this club! She’s one of my best friends, but it’s truly a joy to get to work with her, and she runs the club in a professional yet gracious way that makes each staff member’s workload as straightforward as possible. My only regret is not joining this club sooner!
